Investigation
Do ships and aircraft disappear unusually often in the Bermuda Triangle?
A 2022 working-paper analysis retained 9,096 offshore U.S. Coast Guard-investigated marine incidents, 361 inside its defined Triangle, and none coded as 'Disappearance' inside that filtered sample. The case selection excludes nearshore events, does not cover every ship loss, and lacks regional vessel traffic exposure; it cannot estimate a matched per-voyage or per-vessel-hour disappearance risk ratio.
In the same authors' U.S.-investigated aviation dataset, 53 incidents fell within their Triangle boundary, 11 occurred en route, and two en-route personal flights were recorded as missing. Incident counts are not rates per flight, flight-hour or air-traffic movement, and the study does not provide a matched aviation-region risk comparison.
