Possibility–probability confusion

Possibility–probability confusion occurs when a scenario that cannot be ruled out is treated as if it therefore has substantial probability, or as if mere logical possibility gives it similar weight to better-supported alternatives.

Also known as: possible therefore plausible

How to recognize it

  • The main support is 'it could happen' or 'you can't rule it out.'
  • Competing explanations are compared by possibility rather than relative probability and evidence.
  • A vivid worst case receives attention without a numerical or evidentiary likelihood estimate.

How to reduce it

  • Ask for relative probabilities, priors and evidence—not only logical possibility.
  • Separate 'possible,' 'plausible,' 'probable' and 'supported' as distinct claims.
  • When risk matters, combine consequence severity with probability rather than using either alone.

“Possible” is an extremely low bar. Many mutually incompatible scenarios are possible.

Evidence-based comparison asks which scenarios are more expected given the observations, what prior constraints apply, and how much the new evidence changes those probabilities.

Is Nibiru a real planet that repeatedly enters the inner Solar System?

Astronomers do consider a legitimate hypothesis for an undiscovered distant Planet Nine, but its inferred orbit stays hundreds of astronomical units from the Sun. Wide-field surveys and planetary dynamics strongly constrain large unseen bodies, while the ancient term Neberu is attested in scholarly Mesopotamian corpora as a name for Jupiter rather than evidence of a hidden 3,600-year planet.

Was the Baghdad Battery intentionally used as an ancient battery?

Copper, iron and an acidic electrolyte can make a reconstruction generate voltage, and a peer-reviewed paper has argued for intentional galvanic use. But archaeological context is poor, no ancient electrolyte, wiring or application survives, and material analysis has supported a non-electrical ritual-container interpretation. The intended function remains unresolved.

Was Baalbek an extraterrestrial landing platform?

Baalbek's megalithic masonry is extraordinary, but archaeological work documents Roman-period quarrying and construction activity within a monumental sanctuary complex. No landing infrastructure, spacecraft remains or independent operational evidence supports an extraterrestrial landing-platform function.

Was SARS-CoV-2 deliberately genetically engineered?

Coronavirus engineering is technically possible and several genomic features have motivated laboratory-origin arguments, but current evidence does not identify a verified engineered precursor, construct or diagnostic manipulation signature for SARS-CoV-2.

Did Venus once move through the Solar System like a comet?

Velikovsky's proposed historically wandering Venus would require a massive rocky planet to cross inner-planet orbits and rapidly settle. No verified ancient orbit documents that event; early Solar System scattering and bright appearances are distinct claims.

Was Venus expelled from Jupiter?

Velikovsky proposed that Venus came from Jupiter within human history. Terrestrial accretion and long-term Venus geology conflict with this recent-origin scenario; atmospheric isotope measurements alone are too imprecise to determine Venus's origin.

Is recent global warming not primarily caused by humans?

Natural variability, solar changes and volcanism affect climate, but modern detection-and-attribution studies explicitly quantify those factors. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) and the 2026 Indicators of Global Climate Change update find that human influence accounts for essentially all observed long-term global warming within uncertainty, with greenhouse gases the dominant warming driver. The claim is contradicted.
