The Claim
The claim says an arrangement of permanent magnets can keep a motor turning indefinitely and deliver useful external power without fuel, electricity or another replenishing energy source.
Where It Comes From
Magnet-motor videos often show rotors accelerating toward strategically placed magnets. Because the magnets remain apparently unchanged, the force can look like a free and permanent source of motion.
Some designs use shielding, angled magnets, gates or asymmetrical tracks intended to make attraction help the rotor on one side without imposing an equal cost elsewhere.
Why It Sounds Convincing
Magnets really do exert forces without a wire visibly supplying current. They can hold heavy objects, snap together violently and accelerate moving parts.
A magnet can therefore do mechanical work during a change in configuration. Saying “magnets cannot do work” would be wrong.
The question is whether a complete repeatable cycle yields net work after the original configuration is restored.
The Short Answer
Permanent magnets cannot provide unlimited net energy to a self-running cyclic motor. They can exchange stored field/configuration energy, but the cycle must pay the energy cost of restoring the geometry needed for the next revolution, while friction and other losses remove usable energy.
How It Would Have to Work
A successful self-running motor would need to return all magnets and moving parts to the same physical state after each revolution while delivering positive external work.
If the starting and ending state are identical, any net energy delivered outside the system must have entered from somewhere during the cycle.
What Actually Happens
A rotor can accelerate as it moves into a lower magnetic potential-energy configuration. But leaving that favorable configuration generally requires work. Clever geometry can redistribute torque (the turning effect of a force) across the rotation, but it does not automatically create a net cycle surplus.
If magnets demagnetize or are mechanically repositioned, stored energy may be consumed. That is a finite source, not perpetual operation.
What the Evidence Shows
Permanent magnets exert experimentally real forces and can transfer mechanical energy as one configuration relaxes into another. This supports the visually persuasive segment of magnet-motor videos. It does not establish positive usable work after restoring the original rotor/stator configuration.
Magnetic field energy is part of a physical energy budget, not an endlessly replenished fuel. If an apparatus uses electronic switching, a moving gate, re-magnetization, a fall, battery, or environmental source, the associated work must be accounted for. The 2024 analysis by Hollis Williams of an electromagnet-switched apparent perpetual-motion apparatus is instructive, but it is not a direct test of a permanent-magnet-only machine.
The broad closed-cycle proposition is contradicted by the ordinary mechanics and energy accounting. A particular machine still deserves measurement of its actual external supply, loading, friction, magnetic state changes and cycle reset before any specific performance figure is accepted.
The Strongest Evidence for the Claim
The strongest demonstrations are partial cycles. A rotor may accelerate dramatically toward a magnet, and a carefully arranged track can produce motion over a substantial distance.
That visible acceleration is real. It becomes evidence for free energy only if the device closes the cycle, returns to the same state and continues under load without hidden or stored input.
The Strongest Evidence Against It
The reset problem is persistent. The same magnetic interaction that accelerates a component into a favorable arrangement creates an energy barrier when the system must leave or restore that arrangement.
A working continuous machine should be straightforward to validate calorimetrically or mechanically under load. No independently replicated permanent-magnet motor has demonstrated sustained net output without an external source.
Common Viral Arguments
“The magnets keep pulling forever.”
A magnet can continue exerting force, but force is not the same as unlimited energy. Net work depends on displacement through a complete path.
“The rotor accelerates, so extra energy is being created.”
Acceleration can come from decreasing magnetic potential energy. The relevant test is the full cycle and sustained output under load.
“Magnetic shielding creates a one-way gate.”
Shielding and moving magnetic materials alter field energy and usually introduce their own mechanical work requirements. The complete system must be measured.
The Reasoning Error
Mechanism neglect ignores the work required to reset magnetic geometry. Cherry-picking counts the accelerating portion of a trajectory while excluding the return portion. False equivalence treats persistent force as an inexhaustible energy supply.
What Would Change Our Conclusion?
An independently replicated motor that returns to the same magnetic configuration every cycle and delivers sustained external power with no measurable energy input or depletion would fundamentally change the conclusion.
Evidence Status
Status: Contradicted
Evidence quality: High
Permanent magnets can exchange energy and exert useful forces, but they do not provide a self-restoring source of unlimited net work.
Sources
The decisive test is complete-cycle energy accounting, not whether a magnet can visibly move an object.
