The Claim
The claim says machines can operate indefinitely or produce more usable energy than all energy supplied to them, creating a genuine net surplus without a corresponding external source.
Where It Comes From
Claims appear around magnetic motors, mechanical wheels, electrical resonance circuits, flywheels, gravity devices and unconventional generators. Demonstrations often compare a measured electrical input with one visible output and report a coefficient of performance (the ratio of the reported useful output to the measured input) above one.
Why It Sounds Convincing
Real devices can have an output numerically larger than a selected input measure. A heat pump can deliver more heat into a room than the electrical work it consumes because it moves additional thermal energy from outside. A solar panel produces electrical energy without a wired input because sunlight supplies the source.
Those are not violations of conservation. They show why the system boundary matters.
The Short Answer
A closed machine cannot sustainably produce more total usable energy than all energy entering or stored in it. Apparent over-unity results require checking batteries, capacitors, fuel, temperature gradients, pressure, motion, chemical reactions, ambient fields and measurement method.
How It Would Have to Work
For genuine over-unity, the device must return to its initial state after a complete cycle while delivering net energy to the outside greater than every energy input crossing the system boundary.
Stored energy cannot be counted repeatedly, and environmental energy must be included if the device harvests it.
What Actually Happens
Engineering systems transform energy between forms. Motors turn electrical energy into mechanical work and heat. Generators do the reverse. Resonant circuits temporarily exchange energy between electric and magnetic fields. Batteries discharge chemical energy.
Because real components have resistance, friction, hysteresis and other losses, a self-running loop normally loses usable energy each cycle unless energy enters from outside.
What the Evidence Shows
The central distinction is between an impossible net energy source and a misidentified source of energy. A complete repeating cycle that returns to its original state cannot output more energy than all energy entering the system; irreversible losses make perpetual loaded operation harder, not easier.
There are concrete experimental illustrations. Hollis Williams analyzed an apparently self-sustaining electromagnetic ball apparatus in The Physics Teacher (2024, DOI 10.1119/5.0102604). The motion depends on a powered electromagnet; apparent perpetual motion is not a complete net-energy demonstration. The paper is a teaching analysis of one example, not a controlled test of every advertised generator.
For any named proposed machine, measured electrical supply, thermal exchange, chemistry, pressure, light, mechanical work and changes in stored energy must be included, with a full cycle repeated under independent calibration. Patent documents prove claimed designs were described, not that this complete energy budget passed.
The Strongest Evidence for the Claim
The strongest apparent evidence comes from devices that really do deliver surprising output while a source is hidden or misunderstood. Environmental energy harvesting, phase errors in electrical measurement, non-sinusoidal waveforms, transient stored energy and uncounted thermal flows can all produce impressive demonstrations.
Those cases justify careful instrumentation rather than ridicule.
The Strongest Evidence Against It
When the device returns to its starting state, there is no remaining internal reservoir from which a net surplus can repeatedly emerge. A sustained excess would require either an unmeasured external source or a failure of one of the most extensively tested conservation principles in physics.
That would be revolutionary — and testable.
Common Viral Arguments
“The meter shows 120% efficiency.”
The calculation may be comparing unlike quantities or omitting another input. The full energy boundary has to be measured.
“A heat pump has a COP above 1, so over-unity is normal.”
A heat pump moves environmental heat. Its heat output can exceed electrical work input without creating energy.
“It has a patent, so it must work.”
Patent status documents a claimed invention and legal rights; it is not independent energy-balance certification.
The Reasoning Error
Mechanism neglect omits stored or environmental energy. False equivalence treats legitimate coefficients above one in energy-transfer devices as evidence of energy creation. Patent-as-proof error substitutes legal examination for independent replication.
What Would Change Our Conclusion?
A device independently replicated under transparent conditions, returning to its initial state while repeatedly delivering net energy beyond every measured input and stored-energy change, would fundamentally change physics and this assessment.
Evidence Status
Status: Contradicted
Evidence quality: High
Contradicted for a closed over-unity or perpetual-motion machine. Devices can harvest or move energy, but current evidence does not show sustained creation of usable energy beyond total input.
Sources
The investigation is based on complete system-boundary accounting rather than dismissing any particular machine because it looks unconventional.
Corrections & Updates
October 11, 2026 — Clarification and source update: the complete energy-input boundary and a 2024 externally powered electromagnetic demonstration were added; the Contradicted verdict remains unchanged.
